Gopuram-The Temple Entrance

Gopuram:
Gopuram is nothing but a pyramidal structure. Our ancestors knew that the pyramidal structures are the most balancing structure in the world that is why the pyramid at Egypt still standing.

The pyramidal structures give positive energy and vibration to the devotees. The gopuram was constructed to large heights this is because the old people who cannot come to temple can also pray their god by sitting at their place just seeing the gopuram.

Cultural Importance:
In ancient days, Temples served as the major landmarks of the land. A place was identified either using the palaces or temples. As the palaces were prone for being ruined due to invasion, temples served as the major landmark for the passengers.

In order to facilitate the traveling folk to identify the locations easily, the Gopuram’s of the temples have to be built at high. That paved way for the high Gopuram’s.

By means of seeing the Gopuram’s from distance, passengers calculated the approximate distance of their destination from their location. Gopuram’s were built very high to serve as landmarks as well as for passenger distance’s

Further, temples served as the main shelter for travelers. When people travel between places, they stay at the temple premises to take rest. Before they begin the new part of their journey, they would worship GOD and start.

Scientific Reason:
Gopuram acts as a lightning arrest. A metallic object mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with ground or "earth" through an electrode, engineered to protect the building in the event of lightning strike. If lightning targets the building it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution.

The science behind these constructions is that, the temple architecture gives cosmic energy to the main deity in the Garbha Griha. Firstly, the Juathaskambam acts like an antenna and receives the cosmic energy from the space and through an underground channel it is connected to the main deity in the Garbha-graha. The cosmic energy constantly flows through the Jathuskambam to the idol and energies the it. Secondly, the celestial power drawn through the dome gives the deity effulgence and metaphysical powers. The cosmic-energy is further maintained by sound waves (Vedic chants) and the pyramid like tomb. The pyramid like structure helps to amplify and preserve the cosmic energy. These are the reasons for anyone to feel a positive energy, goodness, calmness or divinity when we approach the inner sanctum.

The copper plate has the tendency to suck part the Ether when that penetrates through the copper and the Herbal resulting in powerful atomic energy that penetrates through the skin to cure the human, and that’s why the copper plate is put on the temple tower.

Interesting Facts:
The deity is washed with various materials (milk, sandal paste, oil) to maintain the idols. The deity is decorated with flowers and ornaments for psychological and visual boost. But the various postures of the deity (sitting/standing, number of hands, weapons they hold) do have significance in emitting the cosmic energy.

Thus the temples serve as the scientific space to receive the shower of cosmic energy or God’s blessings.

Sleeping Directions

Sleep:
Sleep is to take the rest afforded by a suspension of voluntary bodily functions and the natural suspension, complete or partial, of consciousness; cease being awake. Physiologically, sleep is a complex process of restoration and renewal for the body. Generally when we sleep we don’t know which direction we need to place our head. The direction we sleep has a strong impact on our body.

Cultural Importance:
When Parvathi created a boy from turmeric to guard her while she was taking bath. When Lord Shiva returned he find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy's head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Hindus trust that sleeping in north direction will cause death. As per traditions South is the direction of Yama (God of death) we shouldn't keep feet in south and only a dead body must be placed in that position.

Now we may realize why the ancient people said, that our intellect improves by east facing head or house, and life lengthens with the head facing south.

Scientific Reason:
The direction your head faces while sleeping has a strong effect on your physical and mental well-being. Head placement refers to the direction the top of your head points when lying down.
We are advised to avoid sleeping with our head to the north or west.

We all know that our planet has a magnetic pole stretched from north to south with the positive pole at the north and the negative pole at the south. Now, health scientists tell us that we too have a similar magnetic stretch with the positive pole at the head and the negative one at the feet.

It is common knowledge that like poles repel and unlike poles attract not only scientific but also in social spheres. When we lay our heads on the north side, the two positive sides repel each other and there is a struggle between the two.

Since the earth has a greater magnetic force, we are always the losers, and rise in the morning with headache or heaviness.

Benefits:
Head to East: Auspicious. Always make sure you put your head in the East direction as much as possible.
Avoid daytime sleep. Let the night food be light and early. Drink milk with honey.
Avoid reading serious or sensual literature straining the nerves. Repeat a few mantras to relax your mind before you sleep.

Head to South: Auspicious. The best position for sleeping is with the top of your head pointing to the south and feet pointing north.

Head to North or West:
Results: Dangerous. Never sleep with the top of your head pointing to the north and feet pointing to the south. Brings terrible dreams and disturbed sleep. You will feel miserable. Irritability, frustration and emotional instability will develop. It sucks your positive vibrations while you sleep. You will lose 50% of your willpower and your soul power will not increase while you sleep. Your physical and mental health will suffer.

North: it is in line with the earth's magnetic field and will create disturbance in human bodies which has high iron (hemoglobin) content and brings disease and west dulls the brain

Interesting Facts:
When we lay our heads in the southern direction, there is mutual attraction and we wake up fit, fresh and free, unless afflicted by some illness.

We also know that our planet revolves itself from west to east, and sun's magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic force enters our head if we lie with head on the east and exits through feet, promoting cool heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism and electricity. When the head is laid towards the west, cool feet and hot head -- result -- an unpleasant start for morning.

Vaastu - The dwelling of humans & Gods

Vaastu:
A home is called manushyalaya, literally, "human temple". It is not merely a shelter for human beings in which to rest and eat. The concept behind house design is the same as for temple design, so sacred and spiritual are the two spaces. The principles laid down during those days were based purely on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. The observations and corrections made were noted and concluded only after in-depth screening of the situation.

Cultural Importance:
Everybody, rich or poor me and even the gods if descend on the earth, require a house to live in. So Vishwakarma had first of all given the methods of construction and decoration of buildings. It is known as Vaastu Shastra or the architecture. References to these methods and art are found in the sources of ancient Indian culture such as the Vedas, Purans, Ramayan, Mahabharat and other Sanskrit epics.

Proofs of vaastushastra can be found during the time of Ramayana Mahabharat. Even in the cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa the application of vaastushastra can be seen. Since the science goes far back to the times of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna there are many interesting mythological stories concering the origin of Vaastupurush (the deity).

In astrology also, the ancient scholars have given the auspicious times (muhurt) for procuring a plot of land or starting the construction work of a house or first entry in the newly built house etc. The intention of these methods of construction propounded by the ancient saints, seers and scholars, and transmitted through the generations, has been that human beings in this world may build a house which will bring health, happiness and all round prosperity for the inmates; A house which helps in achieving the best in the four groups (Chaturvarg:) Dharma, Artha, Kaama and Moksha and attaining divinity.

Benefits:
Vaastu shastra is helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements (Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND). of the universe .Vaastu is based on 4 directions and 4 corners. The 4 directions are North, East, South and West. The 4 corners are Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest. Nature comprises of five elements including water, fire, wind, earth and sky.

Each of these elements has its own place. Northeast corner is the place of Water. Southeast corner is the place of Fire. Southwest corner is the place of Wind. Northwest corner is the place of Earth. So, in order to gain benefits from all the elements of Nature, we should place them in their proper place. Then only, we will receive good vibrations. If we misplace these elements, then we will have to bear the resultant negative effects.

Scientific Reason:
Vastushastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology, it can also be said as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will secure from things going wrong. It is based on various natural energies, which are available free cost in atmosphere like:
  • Solar Energy from Sun. Lunar Energy from Moon
  • Earth Energy
  • Sky Energy
  • Electric Energy
  • Magnetic Energy
  • Thermal Energy
  • Wind Energy
  • Light Energy
  • Cosmic Energy
Utilization of such energies gives us pleasure peace, prosperity and money etc in our life

There are three forces in action to create harmony. Wind, water and fire or, vaayu, jal and Agni. If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. But if water is put in place of fire and wind in place of water or in any other combination, the forces will start acting accordingly and create disharmony and no peace.

Interesting Facts:
The "open courtyard" system of house design was the national pattern in India before Western models were introduced. The order introduced into the "built space" accounts for the creation of spiritual ambiance required for the indweller to enjoy spiritual well-being and material welfare and prosperity. At right is a typical layout of a square building, meant for family persons (for scientists, artists and yogi). The space occupied by the center is called Brahmasthanam, meaning the "nuclear energy field". It should be kept unbuilt and open to the sky so as to have contact with the outer space (akasha). This central courtyard is likened to the lungs of the human body. It is not for living purposes. Religious and cultural events can be held here—such as yajna (fire rituals), music and dance performances and marriage. The space surrounding the Brahmasthanam is the walkway. The corners are rooms with specific purposes. The northeast quarter is called Isanya, the southeast Agni, the southwest Niruthi and northwest Vayu. These are said to possess the qualities of four respective devatas or gods—Isa (The Supreme Lord), Agni (Lord of Fire - Surya), Niruthi (He-the Protector) and Vayu (Lord of Wind). Accordingly—with due respect to ecological friendliness with the subtle forces of the spirit—those spaces (quarters) are assigned as follows: northeast for the home shrine, southeast for the kitchen, southwest for the master bedroom and northwest for the storage of grains. The spaces lying between the corner zones are those of the north, east, south and west. They are meant for multiple purposes.

Toranam-Door Decorative

Toranam:
Decorating the main door of the houses, temples or any other place, where some ritual is performed, with a Toranam. It is part of the Indian culture. Normally, this kind of decoration is done during festivals or celebrations.

Cultural Importance:
Indians use a Toranam made of fresh and green mango leaves. However, leaves of other species like Neem are also used for this purpose. Most of us know that the green leaves absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This helps in keeping the surrounding atmosphere clean and hygienic. Keeping, the aesthetics in view, mango leaves are preferred, since their shape adds to the ambience. The general reason given for this act is that tying mango and neem leaves would not allow the evil powers to enter the house.

Scientific Reason:
  • Photosynthesis is a process where in plants take in carbon-di-oxide and give out oxygen. This process helps in circulation of oxygen and in turn keeps the room temperature at an optimum level. The air filled with carbon dioxide, which is lighter than the pure air, gets purified immediately while passing through the Toranam. In addition, insects get attracted to the green leaves. This stops the insects from entering the room.
  • In the Indian villages, dry mango leaves are used for treating certain ailments. The ash of dry mango leaves is used in the first aid for cuts and fresh wounds. This ash is applied directly on the wound or after mixing it with coconut oil.
  • Dry mango leaves’ ash has the capacity to check the bleeding. The dry leaves in the Toranam come handy for providing first aid in such cases.
  • It is also a scientifically established fact that the green colour keeps a person mentally fresh and even the modern day medicine advises the modern day man, who comes under severe stress during his normal working hours, to spend some time amidst greenery to freshen his mind and soul.

Incense sticks:

Incense sticks also called agarbattis are fragranced sticks used from ancient period by people all over the world. The evolution of incense stick could be from the burning of aromatic woods in the primitive period. As mankind gained civilization and became more religious, these fragranced agarbattis played important role in daily rituals.

The purpose of burning agarbatti is to purify the bad air. The holy smoke prevents unwanted bad energy and bad spirit from entering home. This is used for fragrance which symbolically suggests the presence of the deity and the love of deity.
